Firefighters in Chelsea were kept busy battling a blaze at a garage and tow truck service Thursday night on Highway 105.
MRC Des Collines police were warning motorists to avoid the stretch of highway north of the Old Chelsea Road exit due to a “major fire” reported around 8 p.m. at Service Routier Ben, known in the community as Ben’s Towing at 623 Rte. 105.
Police and firefighters attended the scene, and several residents reported hearing explosions along with the flames, which were visible from a distance.
There was no immediate word on injuries or damage estimates.
Officials from the Quebec environment ministry are to visit the site Friday to examine the site for toxic materials.
In addition to the towing service, the site houses an auto shop for general mechanic repairs, and sells recycled auto parts.
A man answering the phone listed on the company website declined comment.
