TORONTO - “Incredible journeys” are ahead for $60-million lottery winner Maurice De Gennaro.
The 68-year-old Toronto resident, who struck it big in the March 18 Lotto Max draw, said that unlike a few past winners, he plans to open the purse strings.
Heading to Europe tops the list.
“My dream is to pick up where I left off after a vacation in Europe two years ago suddenly ended when I broke my arm and leg,” De Gennaro said at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. Friday morning when he collected his prize. “I was sightseeing in France and snapping photos when I tripped on some stairs.
“Now, I can return to France, a country I love. Then it will be on to the rest of Europe, taking my time, seeing the sites and just coming and going as I please.”
Along with travel, the single, semi-retired engineer plans to help out family.
It was Easter Sunday dinner when he decided to share the news of the win.
“At Easter dinner with my sister and nephew, I pulled out a photocopy of my ticket and said it appears that I won a substantial amount of money. My sister thought I was joking. I needed my nephew, Richard, to see for himself. He must have checked that ticket a thousand times.
“Then, believe it or not, we just went ahead with our Easter celebration, like nothing had happened.”
It’s the fourth time this year the OLG has given out a $60-million jackpot.
On Feb. 24, Joan Patterson, a rancher from the Owen Sound area, cashed in a winning $60-million Lotto Max ticket from the Feb. 5 Lotto Max draw, and John Henry, of Mississauga, collected his $60-million cheque from the Lotto Max draw on Christmas Day.
Last month, a Mississauga woman collected what was called “the largest jackpot ever in the history of Canadian lottery.” Zhe Wang held the single winning ticket for the $64-million Oct. 17 Lotto 6/49 draw.
