Brown paper covers the glassy skywalk at city hall where dozens of birds were killed over the weekend.

It’s not the first time a flock of Bohemian waxwings have knocked themselves out flying into the windows of the skywalk, which connects the contemporary and heritage buildings of city hall.

Safe Wings Ottawa, a group advocating for mitigation measures to prevent bird collisions, counted at least 34 dead birds at the base of the skywalk.

The last recorded mass avian casualty at the skywalk was in March 2013, but the city has said it happens on an annual basis. The theory has been that the birds are eating fermented berries on the nearby trees and then crashing into the skywalk.

It has prompted the city to stick decals on the glass, but Safe Wings says it’s not good enough. The city previously installed decoy silver birds in the skywalk to warn birds about the overpass.

From the skywalk there’s a vista to the Chateau Laurier.

Safe Wings wants the city to whitewash the windows.
