Senators Sports & Entertainment has announced it has dropped Capital Tickets and is forming a new partnership with Ticketmaster.
According to a statement released Wednesday, the move to Ticketmaster “allows the Senators to align much more closely with rest of the National Hockey League, where 25 of the 30 teams (and six of seven Canadian teams) operate using the Ticketmaster platform.”
The new arrangement will see all tickets sold for SSE events, including Ottawa Senators hockey games and Canadian Tire Centre events, take place on Ticketmaster platforms. Ticketmaster will replace Capital Tickets as the primary ticket provider for all Senators Sports & Entertainment venues July 1.
Capital Tickets is owned by Senators Sports & Entertainment group. It has ticketing rights for all events at the Canadian Tire Centre, from pop concerts to hockey games. The ticket company was created after the Senators hockey club sought bankruptcy protection in 2003 and owner Eugene Melnyk was searching for new ways to make money.
He ended the contract with Ticketmaster, and the hockey club created its own ticketing company. Capital Tickets also has a contract with the City of Ottawa to provide ticketing services for Centrepointe Theatre and Shenkman Arts Centre.
“We’ve been reviewing our ticketing operations for the last six months and have made the decision to move our ticketing platform back to Ticketmaster after 13 years,” said Capital Tickets general manager Tom Gillis in a statement.
“While we have been well served by Capital Tickets and the Paciolan software, this was an opportunity to align ticketing technology with both the NHL and Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM), which will be an important step for the future growth of the business and the organization. We expect that in the years to come, this alignment will make a significant difference to fans in the ease, convenience and benefits of purchasing Senators tickets.”
According to the statement, both the box office at the Canadian Tire Centre and the call centre will remain in place and fans will continue to be able to purchase tickets online. Additional information on the details of purchasing tickets will be communicated to fans before the July 1 transition takes place.
