Some weeks, this column sees a dearth of women performers (we want to feature you, send us your demos!). This is not one of them.

Thursday brings two singer-songwriters writing lushly subtle songs, punctuated by robust voices and the skill to dial them back when it’s needed. Montreal’s Jenny Berkel is in town with a new album (to be released the day after her show in Wakefield) and Toronto’s Michelle Willis has one coming out in a few months. Both have been performing for years, notably Willis who seems to be playing at every gig in Toronto (and recently toured northern Europe with Snarky Puppy), but it’s Berkel for whom you should rearrange anything to be there on time to see — it’s not clear who is going on first, but we think it might be Berkel. The songs off her album Pale Moon Kid seemed to live in that interstitial space between waking and dreaming, a soft-sounded Tori Amos, if you will, though both have the ability to mesmerize any crowd. Be there. April 14, 8:30 p.m., The Black Sheep Inn. $10 in advance. theblacksheepinn.com

On the same night, Toronto’s Mineta is at House of Targ. This is a group (with another woman out front) that almost defies description: combine circus freak with experimental ska and a dose of a milder-mannered Peaches or more edgy Gwen Stefani and you may be in the right zone — and all this happen without being at all trite. They perform with Ottawa’s The Sick Sick Sicks and The Owl Eyes Project. April 14, 10 p.m., House of Targ. $7. www.houseoftarg.com

Simrit‘s fans cannot get enough of her. She’s been lauded and acclaimed with awards and chart placement for her world music but her specialty is music to soothe the soul. She’s a proponent of Naad Yoga, using sound to connect us to the mystical “force revered by sages and yogis,” bringing blessings, joy and a sense of possibility to her audiences. However, and surprisingly, she can also rock out — though there may be less of that in Friday’s show in this church. April 15, 7:30 p.m., Centretown United Church. $30-$40. http://bit.ly/1MqlNMV

Going up a notch on the rock factor, all-woman Nirvana cover band Hervana is in town. Unlike their other very popular shows where the four multi-instrumentalists embraced the noise and fun factor, this show is going to be an acoustic one, as they are playing the iconic grunge band’s Unplugged in New York album, front to back. (If you miss this show, they’re at Perth’s Studio Theatre on April 16.) April 15, 10 p.m., House of Targ. $10. www.houseoftarg.com

On Saturday, former La Voix contestant Charlotte Cardin performs with Her Harbour at Le Petit Chicago, and she is the Canadian songstress to be watching this year. She has natural elegance, a naïf purr in her voice, surprising range and brings a jazz sensibility to soft R&B tunes, albeit with some not-unnatural hip hop elements — see her latest single Like It Doesn’t Hurt with Husser — all explaining why she sells out in her home province of Quebec. (Think juvenile Sade with touches of Winehouse.) Most of her songs are in French, but like a good Montrealaise she has one or two in English. Her first album is coming out in May, though she is already just back from a European tour. April 16, 8 p.m., Le Petit Chicago. $15 at the door.

And because the music is good, not just because he is a dude, we mention Aidan Knight — who is really five friends who play under one name. This is delightful, emotive indie-folk where vocals are not at the fore, but sometimes brash-riffing guitars are, or simply some empty space — where the experimental part is not in the sound, but the arrangement. Seeing some resemblance to early stuff from The Zolas would not be far off, as they have worked together. It’s at once refreshing and familiar, and emotionally stirring or even Proustian, with instruments pulling in themes from iconic sounds. (They are on a cross-Canada tour having released a new album in January, despite many, many setbacks — which they may talk about on stage, so I shan’t ruin it here. April 16, 8:30 p.m., The Black Sheep Inn. $15 in advance. theblacksheepinn.com

We also cannot forget to mention a free show from a band we like to think we introduced to you, fair reader: The Visit, the cello/voice duo whose haunting music will leave you, quite literally, entranced and unable to do anything but listen, are expected to perform some new, as-yet-unreleased songs on Record Store Day (April 16, 5 to 6 p.m.) at The Record Store before they head to Europe for some tour dates.

Other treats this week include the wizard blues/rock fun that is The Micronite Filters (their last album was blood red, after all), performing with Ottawa’s garage rockers The Glorious Moonrockets (April 15, Dominion Tavern). Ottawa’s own Peaks band, the latest iteration for this group of musicians, and hopefully one that will last for their danceable, indie, Goth-lite sound is one we adore (but we gotta have the bass). As are their on-stage audience participation. (April 16, Zaphod’s).

Also Micah Barnes, remembered as a member of the a cappella group The Nylons, has returned to his jazz roots with some acclaim and is starting his New York Stories tour of songs inspired by the Big Apple here (April 16, GigSpace).

For some more noise, extreme grindcore band Napalm Death from the UK are still going strong four decades on, and are playing on the strength of what some say has been their strongest album yet — it’s their 15th (April 18, Mavericks), and blues-punk favourites OBN III return to their Ottawa haunt, when away from their home in Texas (April 20, Dominion Tavern).
