A colleague of the 24-year-old man killed after a vehicle that had been pursued by police crashed into his Honda Accord says the Orléans Moxie’s staff is grieving the loss of a man who kept everyone smiling.
Neville Brown, the restaurant’s general manager, said Alex Cross had worked there for three years as a dishwasher, most recently on a one-shift-per-week basis.
“He always had the most amazing positive, positive energy,” Brown said. “He was just loved by all.”
Cross was also working at BuzzOn, a marijuana vapour lounge on Montreal Road. Colleagues and patrons of the lounge expressed their condolences to Cross’ family on social media.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, a civilian agency that investigates death, serious injury or sexual assault involving police, said that Cross died on Wednesday, the day after his Honda Accord was hit by a Pontiac G6 driven by a 37-year-old man.
Ottawa Police and the Special Investigations Unit were at the corner of Vanier Parkway and McArthur Avenue investigating an over night car accident Tuesday April 12, 2016. Ashley Fraser
The SIU said that the crash happened around 1:15 a.m. after a brief high-speed chase that was called off more than one kilometre before the vehicles collided at the intersection of McArthur Avenue and the Vanier Parkway.
Cross and a young woman were both thrown from his vehicle as it rolled over. The young woman was unconscious and suffered life-threatening head injuries, as well as multi-system trauma. On Wednesday, the SIU said the woman’s condition had been upgraded to serious condition.
Cross was also unconscious and needed help breathing by advanced care paramedics. He sustained life-threatening head injuries and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the Pontiac had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was unconscious when first responders arrived and was treated for a serious head injury and leg fracture. He was taken to the Ottawa Hospital in critical condition where he remained on Wednesday.
The crash was reported remotely by one of the vehicles involved, which is equipped with automated reporting systems when the vehicles airbags are deployed.
Four SIU investigators and two forensic investigators continued their probe Wednesday of the circumstances leading up to the crash.
