It was all about independence and the tunes on Saturday in Ottawa.

Music fans who flocked into The Record Centre on Wellington Street in Hintonburg were just a few of thousands worldwide who were part of Record Store Day.

Record Store Day began in California as an informal celebration of independent record shops and quickly evolved into an official event with a governing body and corporate sponsors. Independent record shops around the world stock up on exclusive releases for the annual event, which is held the third Saturday of April.

According to the Record Store Day website, the idea was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1,400 independently owned record stores in the United States and thousands of similar stores internationally.

After the inaugural Record Store Day in 2008, the event has grown to include stores on every continent except Antarctica, according to the website.
