Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury held an event at an Islamic school in the city’s east end early Monday morning to support the school and make a statement against racism.

One week ago Monday, the Ahlul-Bayt Islamic School on Baribeau Street in Vanier was the scene of a police investigation after vandals spray-painted racial epithets on its walls.

Monday morning’s event, which was held inside the school’s gymnasium, was supported by the Vanier Community Association (VCA) and was aimed at preaching acceptance and condemning the acts that were carried out against the school.

Residents of the area handed out baked goods and fruit to students, while community leaders spoke about tolerance and acceptance in a bid to prevent such acts from happening in the future.

“We want these students and teachers to know that Vanier is a community that celebrates diversity,” says Chris Penton, president of the VCA. “We are a welcoming community, an accepting community and the events of last week do not reflect the Vanier we call home.”

On Monday April 11, school staff arrived at the facility to find the school’s brick facade was tagged with several phrases painted in large black and orange letters on an exterior wall at the rear of the building.

The Ottawa police hate crime unit was called in to investigate, and the graffiti, believed to have been sprayed overnight Sunday April 10, was deemed a hate crime.
