Ottawa – A national competition has recognized the City of Ottawa as being among Canada’s Greenest Employers based on an evaluation of its workplace environmental programs, according to a special feature published in today’s Globe and Mail.

"Ottawa is a clean, green capital city and we are making strides to be even more sustainable each and every day," said Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson. "This distinction recognizes our commitment to preserving the environment in which we all live, and confirms the City is a leader in making its workplaces environmentally friendly."

"The City is committed to protecting the environment and reducing its carbon footprint wherever possible," said Councillor David Chernushenko, Chair of the City’s Environment Committee. "In the last few years, we have updated our Air Quality and Climate Change Management Plan, rolled out several initiatives aimed at reducing our energy consumption, and we are working continuously to preserve our waterways and protect our natural resources."

Some of the initiatives that earned the City of Ottawa this recognition include:

  • Ottawa is one of Canada's most progressive cities when it comes to long-range transportation planning. The City continues to develop its extensive cycling network through the recently updated Ottawa Cycling Plan, which includes the addition of segregated bike lanes downtown; to manage the Ottawa Pedestrian Plan with the goal to create a world-class walking city; and to build its O-Train Confederation Line electric light rail transit system for commuters, scheduled to open in 2018.
  • The City has an ongoing Municipal Green Fleet Plan to help reduce its own day-to-day emissions. It currently has 59 hybrid and/or electric vehicles in service within the municipal fleet. In addition, five City facilities now have one or more electric vehicle charging stations available to the public.
  • The City hosts annual Environmental Excellence Awards presented to individuals and employee teams that develop projects to reduce the City's corporate environmental footprint as well as projects that reduce the community's environmental footprint. Employees can nominate their peers for this award.

The City of Ottawa has been a past recipient of environmental recognition in the areas of sustainability (Corporate Knights magazine), cycling (Share the Road Cycling Coalition) and walking (WALK Friendly Ontario).

“This year will bring continued environmental progress as we work to expand light rail transit, break ground on the final portion of the Ottawa River Action Plan and move forward with bike lanes on O’Connor Street and Mackenzie Avenue,” said Mayor Watson.
