Ottawa Fire Services is reminding residents of a city-wide open air fire ban after responding to five brush and grass fires on Sunday.
The fire department said the fires varied in size and intensity but all had the potential to become devastating incidents.
A city-wide fire ban is still in effect. It is in place to prevent the rapid spread of fire due to dry grass and brush across the city as a result of a lack of rain water in recent days.
This ban will remain in place until conditions improve and the green grass starts to show through dead tall grass that is blanketing the city.
Fire officials said certain periods in the year create conditions that make even controlled burning dangerous, and this risk can quickly lead to fast and uncontrolled spread of fire.
