Dave Belair had just started out his government career at the Privy Council office in the 1980s, when he spotted Pierre Trudeau at an office Christmas party. Belair, 25, was introduced to the then Prime Minister, and promptly asked for a photo.

Throughout the years, Belair has frequently brought the picture out at family gatherings and loves to show it off.

Now, after almost 35 years, Belair is retiring.

As a retirement present for his dad, Dave’s son, Chase Belair, a mortgage broker, is trying to get a second-generation photo of himself and current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, to mirror the image his father took several decades ago.

The elder Belair spent 32 years as a full-time employee of the federal government, with his last 25 years at the Treasury Board. His commitment to his job is what drives his son Chase to try and get the photo.

“He never cut corners and worked way longer than he was supposed to every day. He was an absolute workhorse and even when he was retiring he still worked like a machine,” said Chase.

Belair did get a letter from Justin Trudeau at his office retirement party in mid-April, but Chase said the second-generation photo would be so much better.

“He rarely cries but the right photo could probably make him cry,” said Chase.

As of Monday afternoon, no one from the Prime Minister’s Office had responded to Chase’s request for a photo. He has posted on reddit, sent tweets and emails. But he doesn’t want to be annoying.

“I don’t want to come across as a beggar or a nuisance but I think I’m going to have to spam Trudeau to try and get noticed,” said Chase. “All it really takes is someone close to him to see it.”

When Chase’s sister, Candice, heard what her brother was doing, she said she felt “inspired” and planned to start tweeting almost every day to try and have the prime minister notice their request.

Belair is currently in Florida with his wife, Chase’s stepmother, and doesn’t know any of this is going on. Chase and his two sisters are hoping to surprise their dad with the photo at his retirement party with family and friends in a couple weeks.

“I can’t think of someone who is more deserving than him because he loves the federal government and his job so much,” said Chase.
