It should first be noted that, although emergency responders had to use extraction equipment to free a passenger from one of the vehicles, no one was seriously injured, nor anyone charged, in the two-car pileup – and we mean pileup – that occurred Saturday in the parking lot of the Walmart at Baseline and Clyde.

At about 1 p.m., a Cadillac SRX crossover (a crossover being, in general automotive parlance, the offspring of an SUV and a station wagon or hatchback, but in Cadillac’s own words “a spirited design for an ever-changing world” that “leaves no room – or need – for compromise”) uncompromisingly jumped a curb and landed on top of a four-door Hyundai sedan that, from the eyewitness photos at least, appeared to be minding its own business in a handicapped-parking space by the Walmart entrance, fairly ill-equipped for such a weight to suddenly appear from above.

A third car may or may not have been involved: photos show what appears to be an extremely small Chevy two-door, adjacent to the Hyundai, with some damage to a rear fender – the exact spot, in fact, you might use as a foot — or tire-hold, if you were driving your Cadillac crossover and were looking to get a little air, a la vehicular equivalent of a Michael Jordan dunk.

But why the apparent rush? True, there were some spectacular deals to be had at Walmart on the weekend – red seedless grapes for $1.97/lb; 24-packs of Royale Velour toilet paper for $9.98 (reg. $22.97); Cranston 6-piece patio furniture sets for $98; and Maybelline mascara at $1 off – but would that warrant crowding into the parking spot closest to the entrance, even though it was already occupied, to get dibs on the choicest grapes?

Surely the time you’d end up spending with police, fire and ambulance responders, not to mention insurance brokers and body shop mechanics, explaining time and again how $3.97 for five avocados is almost UNHEARD OF these days, is worth SOMETHING. Why, you could far better spend that time at home perusing the Sobey’s flyer for your Sunday outing. Besides, the Walmart specials continue until Wednesday.

Alas, if bargain-hunting was at all to blame for Saturday’s acrobatics, it wasn’t the chief cause of the commotion. According to police, the driver’s foot got stuck between the gas and brake pedals, sending the Caddy into its spirited adventure.

Case solved. Pass the grapes.
