5 revelations after the LeBreton Flats announcement:

1. Jim Watson liked the RendezVous proposal best: The mayor wouldn’t say it when the two bids were made public, but he acknowledged Thursday he was rooting for RendezVous. “I felt that this one was stronger. It was more realistic, more diverse,” Watson said. Somerset Coun. Catherine McKenney also said she preferred the RendezVous proposal.

2. The NCC didn’t fret over the fate of NHL in Ottawa: “The evaluation committee didn’t consider the hockey politics at all,” NCC CEO Mark Kristmanson said. “We were looking at city building. How would these plans unfold over decades and have the best chance at creating this great new neighbourhood?”

3. Covering the LRT line was a big deal in the RendezVous bid: It’s one of the features RendezVous reps pumped up during the consultations. It paid off. The NCC evaluation committee liked how the city’s Confederation Line wouldn’t create a barrier for movement in the RendezVous plan. In the Devcore Canderel DLS plan, the rail line is a “divisive element,” the NCC found.

4. This might take longer than anyone expected: Stephen Willis, the NCC’s executive director of capital planning, was honest when he suggested it might take longer to get a shovel in the ground than previously anticipated. Negotiations, municipal approvals and federal signoff could take three to five years. Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said “We hope we won’t be a hindrance” during the city planning approval process. Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk is eager to get moving on it “quicker than what (the NCC) showed.”

5. Melnyk is content after failing to get a professional soccer team and a Kanata casino: “This is much bigger,” Melnyk said. In fact, Melnyk suggested winning the negotiation rights for LeBreton is more significant than his acquisition of the Senators. “Now you have solidified yourself for a long, long, long time,” he said. “Now, more than ever, I believe that we’ll bring that Stanley Cup here sooner than you think.”
