Gabriel White was out to snatch up your winter clothes Saturday.

“That high-end pair of gloves you lost? I’ll use them,” White, 35, said at the front of a 200-people-deep line waiting to get into the OC Transpo unclaimed items sale.

His brother Patrick White, 30, was wearing a pair of New Balance shoes he grabbed at last year’s event.

“One time I got a bag of bedding for my rabbit,” Patrick said.

Heartwood House, a non-profit organization that helps charities, has had the Transpo lost-and-found contract since 2001. The biannual unclaimed items sale is a major circle on the calendars of bargain-hunters.

Smoke from a charcoal barbecue set up by a wise neighbouring restaurant drifted above McArthur Avenue as the line wrapped around the side of the building.

The Whites were among the first people in line at 8 a.m. for the noon sale. They were rightfully defensive of their priority status. Anyone inching up to the Heartwood House door got the “back of the line” order from the diehards at the front.

Once the doors opened, the pack snaked its way to the room in Heartwood House that held the electronics.

James Bernard, 16, proudly held up the set of Bluetooth headphones he scooped up for $5.

James Bernard was pumped about his $5 Bluetooth earphones purchase.

He rummaged around in a bag to reveal the rest of his booty: a vaporizer, antique cigarette holder and a pair of fresh Nike shoes.

“It’s packed in there, but if you can stick your head over the crowd and see what you want, you can grab it,” Bernard said.

It seemed everyone who left the sale had an umbrella, which is one of the most common items transit passengers leave behind.

Christie Esau, 30, and Spencer Marcolini, 27, emerged from the building with a couple of umbrellas. Esau was trying on a pair of black winter gloves, while Marcolini was marvelling at a book.

“I was looking specifically for this book,” Marcolini cheered, holding up The Happiness Project.

He paid $3 for it. The friends were at Chapters earlier in the morning where the book was selling for 10-times the price.

It’s amazing what people leave on the bus or O-Train. One woman walked out with a light fixture still in its box.

Shelley Dibranon walked out with the book Gone Girl and a large painting of a lily.

“It’s perfect,” Dibranon said, thinking of where the art would hang in her office.

The line was filled with anticipation — an eagerness to see what Transpo riders have left behind over the winter. There were the veterans like the Whites, but there were a lot of newbies unsure what to expect inside.

“Bargains, bargains, bargains,” Laurie Ouellette, 49, cited as the reason for checking out her first lost-and-found sale.

Ouellette had the ultimate inside source, too. His friend works with the lost and found items and shared the intelligence.

While many were at Heartwood House as leisure to find hot deals, Ouellette said it was also a chance to pick up frills at affordable prices.

“With the cost of living today, every penny counts,” Ouellette said.
