Quiz show host Alex Trebek put Mayor Jim Watson on the hot seat after receiving the key to the city Thursday.
“Receiving this award was quite an honour, but I’m a little concerned on your behalf because I get the feeling that you don’t know what you want to do with your life,” Trebek said during a short ceremony at city hall.
Trebek, 75, went through Watson’s work history — from his days as councillor, to mayor of the pre-amalgamated Ottawa, to his days in the tourism commission, a stint in provincial cabinet, and back to city hall has mayor.
“When are you going to figure out what you really want to do?” Trebek quipped.
Trebek was born in Sudbury, attended the University of Ottawa, and ended up in Toronto working in broadcasting before moving to the United States in 1973, eventually landing the hosting gig on Jeopardy! He considers Sudbury, Ottawa and Toronto his “hometowns.”
“Ottawa has always been my favourite,” Trebek said. “It’s in my heart more than Sudbury and more than Toronto.”

Before awarding the key to the city, Watson rhymed off all of Trebek’s professional and philanthropic accomplishments.
“If you don’t mind I would like to take with me when I go back to Los Angeles your remarks about me,” Trebek told Watson, “because, damn it, they made me sound good.”
