Nokia Ottawa hosted the Inside Ride, a fun indoor cycling challenge, under a large tent at its Kanata campus on Wednesday, May 11, 2016. As with previous years, the beneficiary was Candlelighters, a grassroots charity that provides support programs and services to young cancer patients and their families in the National Capital region. Nokia, in partnership with Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation (CTCACF), has committed to raise $1 million for the charity over the next five years, with the Inside Ride as the biggest fundraiser.
Nokia grew this year’s event by including local businesses and organizations who share the company’s passion for making a difference in the community. In addition to Nokia employees, the Ride attracted teams from several companies, schools and professional sports organizations including the Redblacks and Fury, front office staff from the Ottawa Senators, and their respective mascots. Also attending were Senators defenceman Chris Phillips and his wife Erin, Kanata Carleton MP Karen McCrimmon and City Councillor Marianne Wilkinson, in addition to 11 year-old Candlelighters’ Ambassador, Vienna Arbic.
About the Ride: Teams consisted of six cyclists, with each member riding for ten minutes to fun, fast-paced, uplifting music. As the cyclists rotated, they were cheered on by teammates, friends, colleagues and spectators. Volunteers recorded team mileage, organizers scored costumes and team spirit, and the Inside Ride Crew calculated fundraising totals. There were medals at stake for outstanding team fundraising, team spirit, team costumes, team mileage and top male, female and volunteer fundraiser.
Hundreds of people gathered in Kanata to support Wednesday’s event, including the Redblacks’ Jon Gott, with support from cheerleaders.
