The Anaheim Ducks have cleared the technicality, receiving the Ottawa Senators’ permission to talk to Luke Richardson about their vacant head coaching position.
If and when they call, Richardson is ready. After four seasons as head coach of the Binghamton Senators of the AHL, Richardson and the Senators agreed to part ways. His contract officially ends June 30, meaning the Senators have to sign off on any outside interest.
“I’m looking for that opportunity,” said Richardson, who had a record of 153-120-0-31 with the B-Sens.
“This is a good time for me. I feel like I’ve gained a lot of confidence and I have a good plan. I feel like I can work with younger players.”
There’s no shortage of intrigue in the NHL’s game of musical coaching chairs.
After the Ducks fired head coach Bruce Boudreau following Anaheim’s first-round playoff loss to Nashville, he interviewed for the Senators head coaching job before Guy Boucher was hired. Boudreau has since been hired by the Minnesota Wild.
The Ducks also are expected to interview Paul MacLean, the former Senators head coach who served as an assistant under Boudreau in Anaheim. Fellow Ducks assistant Trent Yawney and Travis Green are also among the candidates for the Ducks head coaching job
