The Ottawa Humane Society wants the public’s help to find the person who put two kittens in a zip-tied box in a Kanata dumpster, leading to the death of one of them.

A contractor working at a housing complex on Leacock Drive heard the kittens meowing and found them in a red plastic box on May 2.

Investigators believe the kittens may have been in the dumpster since April 30.

“These kittens were very lucky someone heard their desperate cries for help,” Bruce Roney, the society’s executive director, said in a statement.

The kittens were mildly dehydrated and had eye and upper respiratory infections, the humane society said.

A humane society veterinarian treated the kitchens with fluids and eye ointment, but the male kitten died last week from a respiratory infection. The male cat’s sister, named Daisy by humane society staff, is still recovering.

“She’s a lively little girl who is incredibly sweet and cuddly,” Roney said in a statement.

“You’d never know how close she came to being carted off to a landfill somewhere in that sealed box to her certain death.”

Anyone with information about this case can call the Ottawa Humane Society at 613-725-3166, ext. 224 with tips.
