The Royal is offering a one-evening workshop to help people with obsessive-compulsive disorder and their families find ways of coping with the often debilitating condition.

The session, entitled ‘A CBT Workshop for Individuals with OCD, their Family and Friends’, is hosted by Dr. Connie Dalton, a psychologist specializing in cognitive behavioural therapy.

The workshop is the result of feedback from the community about the need for help for OCD sufferers, said Nicole Loreto, vice-president of communications for The Royal.

“We always say that mental health doesn’t just affect the individual, it affects the entire family,” she said. “This is something to give coaching strategies, looking at different scenarios and at how best you can respond.

“It’s a lot of self care too in terms of how to live with (OCD).”

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder that affects one in 40 Canadians, according to the Canadian Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. It’s characterized by intrusive thoughts, urges or images that the person is powerless to ignore. Often those thoughts include fear of germs or contamination, or doubts that doors are locked or the stove is turned off. People with OCD may find themselves washing their hands over and over or bound to certain rituals.
