With summer weather on the way this long weekend, the OPP is reminding boaters to wear lifejackets when they head out on the water.

The warning comes after eight people have already died in boating incidents this year, three times as many as died during the same period last year.

None of the victims was wearing a personal flotation device, the OPP says.

“Because the victims were not wearing a lifejacket, the majority of them died either because they could not swim, the water was too cold or they were impaired by alcohol or drugs,” said Brad Blair, OPP deputy commissioner, in a news release.

The OPP is also urging boaters to avoid alcohol when going on the water, noting that alcohol was involved in five of the six fatal boating incidents.

OPP marine officers will be taking to the waterways to promote Safe Boating Awareness Week starting Saturday and to dispel the notion that fatal boating incidents usually involve motorized vessels.

Six of this year’s victims were engaged in kayaking or canoeing activities and either fell into the water or capsized.

The other two involved a small outboard motor boat that got swamped and a personal watercraft operator falling overboard.

The OPP urges the public to call 911 if someone is suspected of operating any type of boat while impaired.
