Bhupinderpal Gill and Gurpreet Ronald would do anything to be together, a Crown lawyer alleged on the first day of their first-degree murder trial Friday.
Assistant Crown Attorney Jason Neubauer told the jury that Gill hated his 43-year-old wife, Jagtar Gill. Both Bhupinderpal Gill and Ronald have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges.
“He said that he didn’t view divorce as an option for himself but that he would do anything to get rid of his wife,” Neubauer alleged.
Neubauer told the jury that Gill and Ronald worked together to plan Jagtar’s murder so they could continue on with their almost two-year affair. In the 28 days leading up to Jagtar’s death, the pair spoke on the phone more than 250 times for a total of 48 hours.
The jury was told that on Jan. 29, 2014 Gill convinced his daughter to go with him to run errands, leaving Jagtar behind in what Neubauer said was a vulnerable state after having surgery the day before.
Neubauer alleged that while Gill and his daughter were running errands, Ronald went to the couple’s home and slashed Jagtar’s neck and left wrist, stabbed her in the stomach and bashed her over the head with a metal bar.
“You will hear that cuts to the palms of Jagtar’s hands and bruises and fractures to the forearms revealed that she did what she could to defend herself,” Neubauer told the jury.
Neubauer alleged that after the killing, Gill tried to dispose of the bloody metal bar and Ronald the knife and latex gloves.
The trial is expected to continue on Friday afternoon.
