Anyone looking for quick and tasty pasta recipes can enjoy a new cookbook and help the Ottawa Food Bank at the same time.

The free online cookbook, Pasta to the Rescue: Hot Summer Dishes for Busy Families, is part of a cross-Canada fund-raising campaign for food banks called Help Us Feed the Hope. The book includes recipes from 15 top chefs across Canada, including Martin Levesque, the executive sous chef at the National Arts Centre.

The campaign is sponsored by Catelli Foods, which will donate pasta to Canadian food banks every time someone views or downloads the cookbook. The goal is to donate one million servings of pasta. To kick things off, Catelli delivered 9,120 boxes of pasta — that’s 36,480 servings — to the Ottawa Food Bank on Friday.

Levesque’s recipe, Rotini Pasta with Braised Lamb Shoulder, is a variation of a dish served at Le Café at the NAC.

Summer is traditionally a slow time of year for donations to food banks, says Michael Maidment, the food bank’s executive director. Demand remains constant, however. His organization helps feed 50,000 people a month in Ottawa by supplying groceries to food banks, breakfast programs and meal programs for the homeless.

Most donations of food and money occur between Thanksgiving and Christmas, said Maidment.
