There was a lot of fiddling around at Marion Dewar Plaza Saturday as a few dozen players from city and valley whipped out their bows to jam in honour of National Fiddling Day.
The jam, featuring old-time tunes featuring Irish, French and other heritages, brought smiles to the faces of passersby and set off several impromptu jogs.
While it was the first such celebration in Ottawa, the city and the Ottawa Valley have an illustrious history in fiddle music, dating back to the logging industry heyday.
“Fiddle music (has an) illustrious history in our communities,” the official proclamation reads. “Providing early entertainment to pioneers, loggers and Bytown residents.
“Fiddle music flourishes today with many fiddle groups and individual musicians providing a vibrant, unique contribution to Ottawa’s music scene and civic culture.”
