A man was cut deeply in the forearm with a chainsaw after an incident in Russell Sunday afternoon but bystanders were able to help staunch the bleeding while first responders were on their way.

The 46-year-old man was hemorrhaging badly but quick-thinking witnesses did speedy first aid, applying multiple dressings, direct pressure and ultimately a tourniquet.

“These interventions made a significant difference in the amount of blood lost,” the Ottawa Paramedic Service reported. “When paramedics arrived, the bleeding was almost controlled.”

They were then able to stabilize the man on the way to the regional trauma centre at the Civic campus of the Ottawa Hospital.

He is listed in stable condition in hospital.
