The skywalk at city hall is now more feather friendly.

The city started installing dotted stickers on the outside of the glassy bridge Tuesday so more birds won’t crash into it and die.

It’s been an ongoing problem with the structure, which connects the heritage and newer buildings of city hall. Waxwings often smash into the bridge after taking off from trees that line a walkway below. Mass avian casualties often pile up in the winter and early spring.

Janice Egan, the city’s manager of satellite administration sites, said the stickers were produced in-house at a cost of $1,500.

Safe Wings Ottawa recommended the window treatment after more dead waxwings were found under the bridge this past winter.

Sarah Kirkpatrick-Wahl lays out a display of dead birds the group Safe Wings Ottawa has collected from the base of buildings in downtown Ottawa.

“I’m very happy that the city has taken real action to prevent further collisions on the walkway,” Safe Wings founder Anouk Hoedeman said. “We can’t guarantee there will never be another bird strike there, but this type of treatment is extremely effective.”

For several weeks the windows of the skywalk have been covered in paper as a temporary measure to warn birds about the structure.

A particularly deadly day last month prompted the city tape the brown paper to the inside of the windows. More than 30 birds, mostly Bohemian waxwings, were found knocked out below the bridge on April 2.

The bird deaths happen every year, startling passerby who come across the gore. One theory has been that the waxwings get loopy after munching the fermented berries in the trees, causing them to fly dangerously into the bridge.

The stickers are the latest attempt to prevent the bird deaths. The city has tried hanging shiny decoy birds from the ceiling of the bridge and applying different decals to the windows.
