A convicted drug dealer has been charged in connection with an exchange of gunfire in the downtown core early on the holiday Monday.

Nehemiah Campbell, 26, was arrested along with a female, Amira Youssouf, 22, in connection with the 3 a.m. shooting near Slater and O’Connor streets.

The pair were arrested and charged with multiple gun offences. Campbell was charged with the discharge of a firearm and failing to adhere to court-ordered conditions. Youssouf was also charged with drug possession.

Campbell is not a stranger to police. In 2013, the former Algonquin College basketball player was charged with drug trafficking. He was convicted in 2015 and sentenced to three months behind bars and year of probation.

In 2014, Campbell was again charged with drug trafficking and weapons offences after a drug raid in the city’s west end. He is scheduled to appear in court for those drug charges on June 7.

Youssouf has no criminal record in Ontario.

Campbell was one of the two men injured in the shooting, who both showed up with non life-threatening gunshot wounds at different hospitals early Monday morning.

The guns and gangs unit continues to investigate. It was the 26th shooting of 2016.

The second wounded male has not been arrested.

Police believe multiple people were involved in the lead up to the shooting, but said they have not been identified.
