The weekend starts with an exciting and eclectic lineup at Pressed, including mipsterz Boston punk band The Kominas, who made a splash worldwide with just two songs posted online in 2005. The group, formed by four exciting Pakistani-American musicians, is at the forefront of taqwacore — music with an Islamic influence, often rejecting prescribed interpretations of the religion, with a big dose of 1970s punk, dance and southeast Asian sounds and, in this case, great bass.
The group is on a mini-Canadian tour, before a bigger tour south of the border in August, with their very good 2015 album, Stereotype. These guys have a lot to say — though it’s sometimes a little absurd, and do it in a super catchy way, with some surprising harmonies among the simple, punk guitar.
They’re joined by Brooklyn’s 777 (or sept sept sept), who should not be confused with Germany’s chernobilly group 777 (Or Triple 7s); She offers infectious, gospel-informed hip hop, when not turning out experimental, drone-like sounds mixes. Also on the same bill is Toronto’s shoegazer Babylawn and Ottawa’s Tyrin Kelly as Lovecraft, playing monotonous, synth love songs. May 27, 8 p.m., Pressed. $10, but no one turned away.
We cannot overlook the powerhouse that is the country superstar we could once call our own, Carrie Underwood, who is at the Canadian Tire Centre on Friday. There were still tickets available at time of print and, no, we do not know if former Senator Mike Fischer will be with her, or if they will be revisiting any of their old home turf. May 26, 7:30 p.m., Canadian Tire Centre. $61.60 to $91.60. canadiantirecentre.com
(Those hoping to see The Skydiggers on Friday at The Black Sheep are too late, as all the tickets have sold out.)
Anyone seeking to do damage to some shoe leather with some big, soul rhythm has four options this week: neo-soul Halifax band Roxy & The Underground Soul Sound is on tour, an eight-piece powerhouse band fronted by singer Roxie Mercier, who makes a lot of noise for such a diminutive size. Their debut album, Don’t You Know, won the group two Music Nova Scotia Awards and Urban Recording of the Year and was produced by Erin Costello who was recently in town with her own new album, but the band is touring with some new music, including a recently released single. Fans of Sharon and The Dap Kings or any exuberant band with a 60s soul vibe will groove right along with their funktastic sound. May 27, 9 p.m., The Rainbow. $8. therainbow.ca
Then on Friday, Ottawa’s almost-brand new R&B and soul band Slack Bridges is throwing a dance party (their promise) in celebration of their new EP, Beholden. There’s no fear the gig will be lackluster, as the six members all have experience working the stage, though in bands ranging from indie folk to hardcore punk: including the lush baritone of frontman Matt Gilmour (Heavy Bedroom, I Refuse, We The Accused), Marcus Ward on keys (Pleasure Craft) to bassist Garett Barr (The Gallop, Mackenzie Rhythm Section) and Julian Selody on sax. Plus, their second-ever show was the Ming Break party at The Black Sheep Inn, and no one complained — but then, nobody stopped dancing.
The eclectic nature of their musical experience gives the soul, which is pretty classic in structure, some interesting touches, including nods to hip hop. The band has cunningly only released a snippet of their new release (posted above), so the EP will be unleashed for the first time at this gig. May, 28, with Zoo Legacy, 8 p.m., Zaphod’s. $10. zaphods.ca
For more neo-soul party on Friday, the aforementioned Mackenzie Rhythm Section is at the Festibière craft beer, cider and wine (and food truck) festival that is on all weekend inside, and outside, the Canadian Museum of History. They’re opening for Montreal synth, garage pop-pop band Galaxie, who many in the region discovered at the FÉO festival recently, despite being Polaris Prize nominated in 2011. (May 27, 7 p.m., Canadian Museum of History. $14.99. beerfest.ca)
Also, Peter Liu and the Pollcats bring something more big-band flavoured to the Lindy Hop Day celebrations, with dance lessons offered by the Ottawa Swing Dance Society. May 27, 7:30 p.m., St. Joseph Church basement. $12. www.swingottawa.ca
Ottawa Race Weekend is the prime event for the city’s athletic sorts this weekend, but for everyone else is mostly a nuisance due to blocked roads. However, they are now offering free concerts over three days at Festival Plaza at City Hall, starting Friday with Québécois award-winning guitarist and pop rocker Michel Pagliaro (8:45 p.m.), preceded by Still Winter Hills (7:30 p.m.). On Saturday see headliner, hometown indie rockers Hollerado, who are supposed to release their third studio album sometimes this year (8 p.m.), with Lost to the River, The Ven Dreddies, Safekeeping and Amanda Lowe. The show gets started early on Sunday at 11 a.m. with Dance Commander and The Jivewires just after noon. runottawa.ca
House of Common, without that important “s”, is hosting a family-friendly day in celebration of National Drone Day, with well over 15 musicians and producers celebrating ambient, experimental and drone sounds at the Ottawa event. The lineup including a litany from Ottawa, including Pony Girl, Trails and Vow(l)s, and a special triple bill from Montreal including Paraphonique, Space Clouds Filter, We Float and Hazy Montagne Mystique — this list makes me pleased and amused we’ve yet to use up all the interesting band names.
There’s a jam planned, interactive performances and visuals, and a hands-on kids drone zone with Hard Science, plus food and drinks available, with events starting at noon. There are more events planned across the country, listed at droneday.org. May 28, House of Common, 11b Fairmont Ave. Tickets: PWYC.
Martin Sexton, the skilled folk-rock singer-songwriter who combines all genres of American music to make something uniquely his own, plays Zaphod’s on Friday. He has lately been eschewing the rockier sounds for something more Americana and mellow, fronted with his embracing, earnest voice, though his showmanship still remains (honed in his early days busking in Boston). Tip: He is offering the Best of Martin Sexton, Vol. 1, a compilation of music from his career, free for download on his website. May 27, with Jonathan CHandler, 8:30 p.m., Zaphod’s. $25 in advance. spectrasonic.com
There will be impressive vocal feats and some dextrous shredding as Guelph prog-metal band Mandroid Echostar hit Ritual. The band intentionally included some of the toughtest guitar riffs they have ever written on their newly-released, full-length album, Coral Throne, while it is also one of the more mainstream, almost pop-y sounding collections they have put out. The album, aided by the pristine tenor vocals and impressive range of singer Michael Ciccia, would not be have been out of place in the hair band era. (If you want to be impressed by guitar playing — and burger eating — check out their playthrough video of The Lotus, posted below.) The show is open to those aged 16 years and over. May 30, 6:30 p.m., Ritual. $13. www.spectrasonic.com
