CORNWALL, Ont. — About 95 students escaped uninjured from a blaze that gutted parts of the Ontario Hockey Academy in this eastern Ontario city Thursday evening.
The Cornwall Fire Department began receiving calls at about 6:41 p.m., and firefighters were on the scene within three minutes.
At one point, flames were shooting out of the roof of the building.
Gilles Lascelle, director of the academy, said the fire started in one of the academy’s rooms, but its cause was unknown.
“By far, the most important thing is that everyone got out safely,” Lascelle said. “Everyone’s accounted for.”
Students at the academy, which is a private residential high school with intense training in hockey, were moved to local hotels for the night.
Lascelle said Friday is the final day of the current term. The new year doesn’t start until September, which gives the academy some time to make decisions about their future.
The fire was contained to the hockey academy, but residents of the neighbouring Heritage Manor nursing home were evacuated as a precaution.
The blaze was well under control by 8:30 p.m. although firefighters remain on the scene.
