The Great Glebe Garage Sale is the place to be on Saturday.
Here are some tips for first-time (or experienced) Great Glebe Garage Sale shoppers.
1. Start the shopping early. What’s a good start time? “As early as possible without annoying people,” says Quevillon.
2. Walk or bike. Don’t go by car; you’ll just get stuck in gridlock. “I always liked doing it on a bicycle,” he says. “You get in and out really quickly and if you have a giant knapsack you throw all the stuff in.”
3. Bring small bills and change. Quevillon suggests carrying $50 to $100, with plenty of quarters. “I’ve seen people try to buy a 25-cent item with a $20 bill.”
4. Don’t buy anything larger than your head. “If I can’t carry it, I don’t buy it.”
5. Be ready to haggle over price. After all, it’s a garage sale.
6. Look south. “The best stuff I found is south of Fifth Avenue, it’s not as busy further south either, it’s a lot more relaxed.”
Keep in mind that it’s also the Tamarack Race Weekend, so there are some road closures nearby (such as along Colonel By Drive between Hawthorne and Bronson avenues) that could cause hiccups for drivers coming in from outside the Glebe.
Hundreds of people flocked to the Glebe for the neighbourhood’s famous annual garage sale, which was as big as ever, attracting second-hand deal hunters from all over the city, on Saturday morning, May 23, 2015.
The Great Glebe Garage Sale
When: May 28, 2015. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: The Glebe, bounded by the Queensway, Bronson Avenue and the Rideau Canal.
How: Don’t drive. Bus routes 1 and 7 (both north and south) go right through the Glebe. Walking and biking are both good options. (If you must drive, park away from the garage sale and hoof it in for the shopping.)
