Ottawa – On World No Tobacco Day, Deputy Mayor Mark Taylor, Councillor Shad Qadri, Chair of the Ottawa Board of Health, Councillor Jeff Leiper, Kitchissippi Ward, along with Ottawa Public Health and community partners will celebrate the Heather Crowe Park Rededication Ceremony.
The park is dedicated to Heather Crowe, who was a tireless advocate for smoke-free legislation. Heather was an Ottawa-area waitress and non-smoker, who was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in 2002 due to workplace second-hand smoke exposure. She travelled across Canada to speak with the public, politicians, hospitality workers, health professionals, and youth to discuss the effects of tobacco use. Heather passed away on May 22, 2006, nine days before the Smoke-Free Ontario Act came in to effect.
In 2009, the City of Ottawa dedicated the park at 1902 Scott Street in her honour. Unfortunately, in September 2015, the original memorial plaque was stolen and it has never been recovered.
Date: Tuesday,May 31
Time: 10 a.m.
Location: Heather Crowe Park, 1902 Scott Street at Island Park Drive
Parking: Patricia Avenue (north of Transitway, east of Island Park Drive)
The rededication event coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Smoke Free Ontario Act.
Event participants will be available for a photo opportunity and media availability at 10:25 a.m.
