These were some of the reactions to the release of Wednesday’s jail report.
“For years this government has treated corrections staff with virtually no respect and has ignored their concerns. . . . We hope the minister is being forthright when he says this report ‘will not just go on a bookshelf somewhere.’ . . .We were specifically pleased to see recommendations for increased mental health supports.’
— MPP Rick Nicholls, Ontario PC critic for community safety and correctional services
“I feel very hopeful, I feel very positive. … I feel the implementation of those recommendations will make a big difference at OCDC. I’m not aware that there’s ever been an effort of this sort to bring people from different perspectives … but bringing people from the defence council association of Ottawa, from the community who represent different interests, and also involving the opinions of the prisoners of the jail as well.”
— Irene Mathias, Mothers Offering Mutual Support (MOMS) – community representative and task force member.
“We are encouraged to see that some of the recommendations around bail, remand and health care are consistent with our own research and reports. … Last, our research in Unlocking Change (2015) demonstrated how many persons with mental health issues increasingly wind up in overcrowded detention centers. Research shows that segregation has been increasingly used as a management tool for individuals with physical and mental health issues.”
— Graham Brown, policy analyst with the John Howard Society of Ontario
— Jennifer French, NDP Corrections critic

“We have consistently seen this Ministry using band-aids to deal with the crisis in corrections instead of a real plan to stop the bleeding. I’m glad to see comprehensive recommendations come out of this Task Force – but recognize that there are no simple fixes. This crisis is the result of years of government neglect across ministries.”
