Ottawa – The City of Ottawa has become a member of the EnviroCentre’s Carbon 613, a made-in-Ottawa, target-based sustainability program for businesses, as part of its ongoing commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). The announcement was made by Councillor David Chernushenko, Chair of the City’s Environment Committee, during an event at City Hall today.

“Earlier this year, the City restated its commitment to GHG reductions through our updated Air Quality and Climate Change Management Plan, which provides a framework for how the corporation will mitigate and adapt to climate change over the next 20 years,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “The City has taken a leadership role in the development of its own plan and we will continue to lead by example through our membership with Carbon 613.”

In February, City Council directed staff to work with key stakeholders and community partners to reduce community-wide GHGs and to pursue a long-term GHG reduction target of 80 per cent below 2012 levels by 2050. The City’s decision to join Carbon 613 directly supports Council’s direction by better positioning it to meet the goals and objectives of the Air Quality and Climate Change Management Plan.

“As a Carbon 613 member, the City can continue to demonstrate its commitment to working with stakeholders and community partners to reduce community-wide GHGs and to play a leadership role in bringing on key partners, including Hydro Ottawa and the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce,” said Chair Chernushenko. “We encourage other organizations to create their own plans to reduce GHG emissions.”

Carbon 613 members are environmental leaders in the community, including existing members Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, the Canadian Museum of Nature, Your Credit Union, Arborus Consulting, Smarter Shift and CSV Architects.
