Members of the public will have a chance to bask in the Beaux-Arts architecture of the John A. MacDonald Building as part of the Doors Open Ottawa event this weekend.

The federally-owned building, formerly the Bank of Montreal on Wellington Street, completed a whopping $99.5-million renovation in 2015 and access has been limited to government functions since then.

The annual springtime Doors Open Ottawa allows access to more than 120 historically and culturally significant buildings stretching from the Diefenbunker Cold War Museum in Carp to the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum in the east.

Other additions to this year’s roster include the Wellington Building, which completed renovations in fall of 2016 and the National Research Council of Canada building on Sussex Drive.

Popular attractions over the years have included Earnscliffe, the official residence of the British high commissioner, the Supreme Court of Canada building and the embassies of the United States and France — both of which have already reached their preregistration capacities. The list of sites also comprises universities, research centres, churches, mosques and government agency headquarters.

There is no entrance charge at any of the participating venues.

For those wanting to ditch the stress of traffic and parking, free shuttle buses will be operating with stops at Sussex Drive and Bruyère Street, Mackenzie Avenue and Rideau Street, Wellington Street between Bank and Kent streets, Somerset Street and Bayswater Avenue, Somerset Street and Booth Street, Laurier Avenue West and City Hall and Laurier Avenue East and Chapel Street every 35 minutes between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on both days. Nearly 50 of the participating buildings are located within one kilometre of the shuttle stops.

If two-wheel transportation is preferred, participants can explore the sites on a bicycle tour offered by Escape Bicycle Tours.

Priding itself as the second-largest architectural event in North America, Doors Open Ottawa estimates that more than 850,000 have visited its sites since the event’s launch in 2002.
