The province is kicking in more than $1 billion to help build Phase 2 of Ottawa’s Light Rail Transit system, including money for extensions to Ottawa Airport and to Trim Road in Orléans, Premier Kathleen Wynne announced Friday morning.
Construction on Stage 2 of the LRT is scheduled to begin in 2018 and trains should be ready for service in 2023.
The province had already pledged $975 million for Phase 2, but Friday’s announcement adds cash and a commitment to the airport and Trim Road links.
Mayor Jim Watson described the news “as an incredible day for Ottawa.”
Phase 2 will add 30 kilometres of track and 19 new stations to the LRT system, stretching from Bayshore in the west to Trim Road in the east.
