Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson hosted approximately 100 ambassadors and high commissioners at the Horticulture Building this evening to invite the diplomatic community to do its part to make the 2016 One Young World Summit a resounding success. Ottawa will play host to this unique world-class forum September 28 to October 1, when more than 1,300 impressive young leaders from over 190 countries will convene in our city to discuss some of the world’s most pressing issues and find opportunities for change.
“In Ottawa, we recognize the importance of youth and the role they play in shaping our communities, and we are very excited to welcome them from across the globe for this Summit,” said Mayor Watson. “Ottawa’s embassies and high commissions are seen as valued community partners that contribute to our community’s cultural diversity,, and it is my hope that they will all play an important role in enriching the experiences of hundreds of young leaders from around the world when they come to Ottawa this fall.”
To engage the diplomatic community in the Summit, Mayor Watson invited embassies and high commissions to host dinners for delegates, organize discussion groups and arrange for the sponsorship of delegates from their country.
"One Young World is thrilled to have chosen Ottawa to host our 2016 Summit because of the role young leaders are playing in helping make Ottawa such a vibrant, diverse and energetic global capital, " said, Kate Robertson, founder of One Young World. "As a Summit that brings together young leaders from 196 countries, we are excited by the level of interest from Ottawa's diplomatic community towards engaging with One Young World delegates at the Summit this September."
The One Young World Summit is the largest gathering of nations after the Summer Olympic Games, designed to bring together young leaders from across the globe to create lasting, meaningful relationships that empower delegates to create positive change in their community.
“One Young World brings worldwide attention to Ottawa, with more than 200 international media representatives following the proceedings; not to mention world-renowned Counsellors and more than 1,300 talented young leaders from every corner of the globe,” says Michael Crockatt, President and CEO of Ottawa Tourism. “The eyes of the world will truly be upon us – what an excellent opportunity to shape the image of Ottawa.”
Since its inception in 2009, One Young World has hosted 7,300 delegates between the ages of 18 and 30, with a further 1,300 expected from 196 countries at the upcoming Summit here in Ottawa, which takes place from September 28 to October 1.
To date, Summits have taken place in London (2010), Zurich (2011), Pittsburgh (2012), Johannesburg (2013), Dublin (2014) and Bangkok (2015).
