A pair of CF-18 fighter jets were scrambled by NORAD last month after a large, unidentified drone was spotted near the flight paths of commercial passenger planes landing at the Ottawa airport.
The two fighter planes from CFB Bagotville were sent to Ottawa after a Westjet pilot first noticed the drone flying at about 6,700 feet at about 4:45 p.m. on May 25. An Air Canada pilot also confirmed seeing the drone minutes later. Both flights were arriving in Ottawa from Toronto.
Ottawa air traffic controllers alerted NORAD about the drone, which then scrambled the two CF-18 Hornets to investigate. The jets returned to Bagotville after being unable to find the drone. The RCMP is investigating.
The drone was last spotted on radar heading to the southeast at about 37 to 55 km/h and was lost at about 4:55 p.m., according to a report released by Transport Canada this week.
The Transport Canada report noted the drone was spotted flying at the same altitude as Westjet flight 366. It was about 2,000 feet below and 1.8 km to the left of Air Canada flight 458.
“If it is something that air traffic controllers from Ottawa would have advised North American Airspace Defence Command that they were having interference with a unidentified flying object over Ottawa airspace, then NORAD would activate resources to go and investigate that threat,” said Evan Koronewski, a spokesman with the Department of National Defence.
