Summer is here (sort of) and with its arrival comes the opening of Ottawa’s outdoor pools, beaches and splash pads.
Outdoor pools and wading pools
Ottawa’s outdoor pools will start opening this Saturday, June 11 and continue until June 18. Wading pools will open between June 24 and July 4; their availability will be location dependent, so check before you wade.
Each of the City’s wading pools will host a free public event over the summer. The special events will be held as part of the City’s Waterplay program where kids can join in games and learn-to-swim activities to help build swim skills and learn water safety.
Check event dates for your local wading pool here.
Beaches
Ottawa’s four beaches, Britannia, Mooney’s Bay, Petrie Island and Westboro, will be open next Saturday, June 18 and remain open until Sunday, August 28 from noon to 7 p.m.
Beach goers will get an extra week of swimming at all four beaches this year thanks to the City’s decision to provide an additional week of lifeguard supervision.
Water quality at Ottawa’s public beaches is monitored daily by Ottawa’s Public Health. Water quality results are available at ottawa.ca, on Twitter @ottawahealth or by phone at 613-580-2424 ext. 13219.
The City says if high levels of bacteria are found at the beaches a no-swim advisory will be issued.
Flags and signage will be placed on beaches if a no-swim advisory is in effect. Beach goers can also get alerts about no-swim advisories sent out through Twitter @ottawahealth.
Last year there were 30 no-swim advisories issued, including 16 after heavy rainfall.
Heavy rain can sometimes raise E. coli levels in the water caused by surface run off from bird feces and “other surface contaminants”.
Splash pads
All City of Ottawa splash pads are now open. They’ll continue to operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m each day until September.
Friendly reminders
The City reminds all of its water lovers to follow their water safety rules and practice sun safety.
Residents are asked to contact 3-1-1 to report a splash pad that is not working and stressed that smoking and vaping are prohibited on all City properties, including beaches.
