SAMMAMISH, Wash. — Smiths Falls teenager Brooke Henderson won the first major of her young career in brilliant fashion, charging with a final-round 65 and then beating the world’s No. 1 player, Lydia Ko, in a playoff at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
Henderson stuck her approach on the first playoff hole (the par-4 18th) within two feet of the cup. Ko had an 18-footer for birdie but missed. Henderson’s tap-in sealed the tournament.
Ko, 19, and Henderson, 18, tied at six under par after the regulation 72 holes.
Henderson became the second Canadian woman to win an LPGA major, joining Sandra Post who won this championship in 1968.
Henderson displayed a spectacular short game on Sunday, saving par on the 18th hole from the trees to keep her share of the lead at six under. Her drive went right and she caught a big break with an opening between two big trees. Her second shot caught some branches and dropped into the fairway, but from about 75 yards she hit to about 10 feet and made the putt.
Henderson’s round was highlighted by an eagle from 100 feet on the par-5 11th hole, which she drained from off the front of the green with her putter.
That pulled her to within a shot of Ko and they traded birdies down the stretch with Henderson drawing even with a 35-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole.
Henderson was also helped by some outstanding sand play. She got up and down four times, making birdie on the sixth and saving pars on the seventh, eighth and 15th holes.
Ko missed a short par putt on No. 17 to drop back into a tie with Henderson.
Ariya Jutanugarn had a shot to get to the playoff, but missed a long birdie putt on No. 18, ending the Thai golfer’s bid for her fourth win in a row.
