Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Ottawa area on Monday afternoon.
The weather agency said in the warning issued at 3:04 p.m. that conditions were favourable for severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and hail, which can damage property.
“Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles,” the warning said. “Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.”
Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm warnings when conditions are favourable for large hail, damaging winds and torrential rainfall.
A heat warning was also issued for the Ottawa region on Monday. Temperatures were expected to reach the mid-30s C, with humidex values near 40.
There will be a break by Monday night, though, when a cold front moves in from southwestern Ontario, bringing the possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms, and a low of 15 at night.
Once the cold front passes through, Ottawa will be left with an expected high of 23 on Tuesday.
