Arson is once again suspected after a red-covered footbridge was set aflame in Gatineau’s east end early Tuesday.
Firefighters worked for about 90 minutes to extinguish the blaze at the Brabant-Philippe bridge over the Rivière La Lièvre.
The bridge had been closed to foot traffic following a fire last week.
They were called to the fire shortly before 3 a.m. and found the already damaged bridge engulfed in flames.
High-pressure hoses were used to keep the fire away from the neighbouring forest.
There were no injuries.
The bridge is remains closed and the police have been called to investigate.
It was the second suspicious fire in a week and the fourth fire at the structure since it was built by volunteers in 2007.
It was destroyed by teenaged arsonists on New Year’s Eve, 2011, and rebuilt by 2015 (more volunteer labour, using steel girders steel girders this time).
The bridge was the target arson again last summer, when someone attacked the deck with some kind of torch. This time there were no arrests.
And about 4:45 a.m. last Wednesday, neighbours saw flames once again. The fire department put out the latest fire, a small blaze that still did heavy damage to several eight-by-eight beams in the bridge’s foundation.
Local councillor Jean Lessard has called for security cameras on the bridge, which is in a secluded park area screened from homes by a mature woodlot and train tracks.
