A Gatineau first responder warned swimmers to stay out of the Deschênes Rapids, after a man and woman in their 20s who swam through them across the Ottawa River on Friday are “lucky to be alive.”

“It’s a very, very dangerous location for swimming,” said Jean-Guy Leclerc, director of operations for Gatineau’s fire service, adding that even when the water is as low as it is now, the rapids are powerful and studded with rebar from an old dam.

“They are lucky to be alive – I don’t think they realize how close they came.”

Ottawa Fire first tweeted at about 4 p.m. that water rescue crews were on their way to the rapids near Britannia after two people were reported to be in distress.

Minutes later, the crews were called off when their counterparts across the river found two people out of the water at a waterfront park.

The bathing-suit clad pair were escorted by police to the Champlain Bridge to make their way back to Ottawa.
