Some of Canada’s top road cyclists hit the course Saturday in Tunney’s Pasture, for the start of the four-day Global Relay Canadian Road Champions.
Saturday’s events were mass start road races for junior men and women, elite women, and para-cyclists, who competed at different times along a 10K circuit around the Tunney’s campus.
The under-23 riders and elite men will race on the same circuit on Sunday.
After a training day on Monday, competition will resume for the individual time trial competitions, the “race of truth” that pits every rider against the clock. Time trials for all categories will take place on Tuesday in Gatineau Park.
The championships will conclude Wednesday with the Canadian criterium challenge in Aylmer. The fast-paced criterium offers a chance for spectators to see riders hit speeds of more than 70 km/h.
“This is the first time in many years that the Canadian championships road races are taking place in an urban setting,” said Doug Corner, who, along with John Large, is the local organizer for the championships.
The four days of racing culminating in the official announcement of Canada’s team for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio in August.
