Rideau Street is expected to reopen to visiting dignitaries for this week’s North American Leaders’ Summit following repairs to damage caused by a sinkhole earlier this month.

“We were really targeting to get this done before the North America Leaders’ Summit and especially Canada Day,” city manager Steve Kanellakos said Sunday night.

U.S. President Barack Obama and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto will be in town with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the annual Three Amigos Summit, which takes place Wednesday at the National Gallery of Canada.

Kanellakos wrote in a memo that, as of Sunday afternoon, motorists and cyclists would be allowed to travel east on Rideau Street and turn left onto Sussex.

The city said in a statement that northbound Elgin Street was also reopening Sunday between Albert and Rideau streets, as was eastbound Wellington Street between Elgin to Rideau streets.

The repairs are almost complete, the city said, but southbound Sussex between George and Rideau streets will remain closed to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. Kanellakos said that northbound Colonel By Drive was also to remain closed. Rideau Street between Sussex Drive and Waller Street also remained closed.

Kanellakos said he anticipates to have the final engineer’s report signed off on by Tuesday, just in time for the visit by the presidents.

He said that a majority of the sidewalks on Rideau have opened, allowing access to businesses in the area before the July 1 holiday that is likely to be one of the busiest days of the year. By Canada Day, the city hopes pedestrians will be able to walk on Rideau, which will be re-opened to OC Transpo buses and taxis on July 2.

On the weekend, the smell of hot paving tar greeted pedestrians on Rideau near Sussex as crews continued to repair the sinkhole.

Crews have been working around the clock infilling the gaping pit, as well as pumping out water from an LRT tunnel below the hole.

“I’m really happy with the progress,” Kanellakos said.
