Armloads of soft and cuddly teddy bears were donated Monday night to the local Children’s Aid Foundation by members of Quota International of Ottawa.
There were 70 bears, to be exact, to mark the 70-year milestone of the service club’s Ottawa chapter and its hands-on projects and fundraising in aid of women, children and the deaf and hard-of-hearing.
The stuffed animals, presented by club president Willy Lee to foundation executive director Walter Noble, will be given to kids coming into foster care.
The bears have become somewhat of a tradition for Quotarians. At their 60-year anniversary celebration, they gave away a sleuth of 60 to underprivileged children.
The dinner, held at Algonquin College’s Restaurant International, featured as its guest speaker Jim Kyte, retired hockey player-turned-dean of the college’s School of Hospitality and Tourism.
Kyte, who’s the only legally deaf player to ever play in the NHL, shared his fascinating life story (in 25 minutes or less) with nearly 90 attendees. He broke down his motivational talk on how to achieve success into five Ps: perspiration, preparation, positive attitude, perseverance and passion. “Every morning I wake up and I say ‘Today is going to be a good day’. Every morning,” said Kyte, who played for years in the NHL, survived a serious car crash and dealt with his youngest son’s diagnosis of autism.
On hand to help recognize the good work of the Quota Club was Deputy Mayor Mark Taylor. Also out supporting the club were representatives from such beneficiary charities as the Shepherds of Good Hope, Youville Centre and Youth Services Bureau.
