Ottawa – The city reminds motorists not to use or block bus and cycling lanes and that By-law and Regulatory Services and will be out in full force to ticket and tow vehicles that stop in bus-only lanes or on cycling tracks.

Motorists are not permitted to use bus-only lanes even for short drop-offs or deliveries. These lanes are reserved for OC Transpo and emergency vehicles. The penalty for stopping in a bus-only lane is $120 and for driving in a bus-only lane is $175.

To improve traffic flow, the City will undertake an enforcement blitz that will focus on main arterials where cars may also be ticketed and towed to prevent illegal parking during rush hour. Enforcement is being increased to ensure public safety and efficient traffic flow during this busy construction season. Bus-only lanes are clearly marked on the roadway with diamond shapes, defined white borders and signage.

Stopping or parking in a cycling lane endangers cyclists. Vehicles are not permitted to park or drive in segregated bike lanes and cycling lanes and will face penalties including towing and a $120 fine. Vehicles may cross over cycling lanes when turning or entering a loading zone, but must not impede cyclists.
