Rideau Street will reopen to pedestrian traffic from Sussex Drive to William Street on Canada Day following repairs to damage caused by a sinkhole earlier this month, the city says.
City manager Steve Kanellakos said the street was declared safe to reopen by the contractor, Rideau Transit Group, late Tuesday afternoon.
Buses won’t be allowed back on Rideau Street until July 2, after the this week’s North American leaders’ summit and Canada Day celebrations.
A majority of sidewalks on Rideau Street have already opened, allowing access to businesses in the area before the July 1 holiday that is likely to be one of the busiest days of the year.
