Open-air fires are legal in rural parts of Ottawa again, just in time for Canada Day.

The announcement came Wednesday from the city of Ottawa, ending a ban that has run through most of June because of dry weather and the danger of grass fires that can spread quickly.

However the urban area is still subject to the permanent ban on open fires, including outdoor fireplaces.

Quebec’s forest fire prevention agency, SOPFEU, ended its own provincewide ban on open fires in or near forests last week, just before St-Jean-Baptiste Day.

The Ottawa International Airport reported 12 millimetres of rain Monday and another 4.6 mm Tuesday, and there’s more rain in the Environment Canada forecast for the next few days.
