Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson and Somerset Councillor Catherine McKenney took the first official steps today on the permanent Rainbow Crosswalks installed at the intersection of Bank Street and Somerset Street West.
The crosswalks were installed through a partnership between the City of Ottawa and the Bank Street BIA. Their official opening also takes place at the conclusion of the first ever Pride Month in Canada.
“Projects like this allow Ottawa residents to incorporate diversity, equity and inclusion in their day-to-day lives,” said Mayor Watson. “The Rainbow Crosswalks, especially in the wake of the Orlando tragedy, are a visual demonstration that Ottawa is a welcoming city for the LGBTQ community, and a city for everyone.”
The crosswalk functions the same as any other, except this one displays the rainbow colours of the Pride Flag. The thermoplastic material used will last for approximately five years. This follows a similar pilot project done last August at the same intersection but with non-permanent paint, which gradually wore off.
“I’m pleased that the City and the business community have worked together to make this Rainbow Crosswalk a permanent reality,” said Councillor McKenney. “Not only does it deliver a strong message to the local LGBTQ community, but it further beautifies the gay village and reflects the contributions of residents and businesses in the area.”
