A potential tragedy ended positively Saturday afternoon when a sailor managed to make it to shore after his sailboat capsized in the Ottawa River.
Ottawa Fire Services said the catamaran-type boat overturned in the area of the Connaught Rifle Range and floated down river before hitting shore near Andrew Haydon Park in the west end.
Fire services was advised at about 3:30 p.m. and, not knowing the status of the boat’s occupants, launched a search on the water and along the shores near Crystal Beach.
The boat owner managed to contact authorities about an hour later to say he was safe.
The boater, who was wearing a wetsuit, apparently suffered minor injuries.
