It’s not easy to dance — and even get dipped — while wearing a full police uniform with a bulletproof vest, but one Ottawa officer made it work this Canada Day weekend.
A video of officer Tracey Turpin showing off some hip hop and salsa moves with local videographer Yves Soglo on Rideau Street has gone viral, garnering more than 500,000 views online.
“It was completely unexpected that she would dance with me,” Soglo said. “It happened in the most spontaneous way.”
Soglo was downtown filming a music video for local artist Konah Raynes for Keshet Productions on Friday. He got eight people, including Turpin, to dance with him to a Raynes cover of the Justin Timberlake’s song Can’t Stop this Feeling.
He says he approached the officer as she was coming down from Parliament Hill, and she agreed to be part of the music video that was created using footage from Canada Day weekend and will be released in the next few weeks.
At first, Turpin wasn’t sure what to do, Soglo said, but since he’s a dance teacher, he showed her a few moves. He showed her basic hip-hop moves before they broke out into salsa dancing. Soglo even dipped the officer at one point in the video.
Turpin lost her hat as she twirled around but quickly put it back on and continued dancing on the street.
A group of people clapping as they walked by joined in and danced with Soglo and Turpin in a circle on Rideau Street, which was shut down to traffic for Canada Day.
